Hi Connie,

Sure, it’s the more uphill direction on a dirt road, but unless the park has decided to close the road to bikes (which I’m not aware of and I’m not sure why they would), you can certainly ride from Bowman to Kintla.

Have a great hike.

I’m considering doing the Bowman-Kintla loop and riding my bike from Bowman back to my car in Kintla (you inspired me!). Would it be possible to ride south to north (it might be my only option, based on available permits)?

The mountains in Glacier will be deep in snow in May. The lowest elevations in the park may become snow-free by late May or more likely sometime in June, but the Nyack-Coal Creeks Loop reaches higher elevations that won’t be snow-free until mid-July in a normal year.

Starting In West Glacier and avoiding the Rivier Crossing at the Nyack/Coal Creek Trail Head.

Hi Olivia,

The options for shuttling between trailheads varies greatly in Glacier depending on the trailheads; there’s not just one shuttle service that covers all park trailheads. My stories about specific trips in Glacier, most of which require a paid subscription to The Big Outside to read in full, and my e-guides to a couple of backpacking trips in Glacier provide transportation information specific to those trips. Transportation is also part of the tips I offer in my very detailed Custom Trip Planning.

I hope you find one of those options useful to your planning. Get in touch anytime. Thanks.

The way you put it makes it sound like it’s a common service that you can hire/ pay for. Or are you referring to having 2 cars and leaving one at each trailhead?

Hi Eric,

Good to hear from you. I did hear about Glacier’s east side entrances being closed by the reservation. The park itself remains open and is issuing backcountry permits, and a least three of the trips on this list can still be done this summer. With some creative planning, a backpacker can obtain a permit for this summer and put together a trip based on these recommendations.

Safe travels and I hope you’re doing well.

Michael

Last I heard the closure while be for the whole season. Hope you are reasonably well. Eric

Starting and ending at the same TH is easiest for late-season backpacking through the park.
