His detailed advice was a big factor in making our trip a success. He helped with everything from putting together details of our itinerary, suggesting additions and changes, and making detailed recommendations for gear required and weather to expect on the hikes. We highly recommend his custom trip planning service. Thanks again Michael!

I usually plan several adventures a year for myself and my family, but Michael’s expertise was so insightful and helpful in every way. He helped us tailor a trip to our level of experience/fitness and helped us choose a location and time frame that worked for us on short notice. We backpacked in the Sawtooth Mountains in late August. The trip was fantastic! Everything about our 5-night backpacking adventure was phenomenal. This is an area I never would have considered before, and with Michael’s help, we felt like experts. Michael answered all our questions and prepared us for our hike. We’re going to use his services again this year more than once. I can’t wait to see the adventures he helps us plan!

He planned the route, gave us some off-the-beaten-path campsites, and helped us navigate the somewhat confusing permit system. We felt very confident going into the trip with his detailed instructions, and we had a blast!

The trip was planned using Michael’s trip planning service. This is the second such trip that Michael has planned for me and his service is outstanding. For both trips, MIchael gave me well written and detailed plans. The plans start with a general overview describing the region and finish with a detailed day-by-day itinerary. Aspects of the trip include expected highlights along the route, potential campsites, locations for water as well as contingencies that deal with potentially unexpected challenges such as weather issues or widlfires.

I certainly feel as if Michael’s plans gave me the knowledge that I needed to have a successful and enjoyable hike and I certainly intend to rely on him for future backpacking trips.

It was an investment that was absolutely worth every penny.

I completed the trek in October, and the changing leaves were absolutely spectacular. As someone who was not familiar with New Hampshire’s terrain or hiking specifics—particularly the crucial aspect of water availability—having a detailed, custom plan significantly eased my anxiety about the experience.

The detailed planning provided peace of mind and an enjoyable trek. If you’re considering the Pemi Loop or other extended hike, especially if you’re new to hiking in New Hampshire, I highly recommend using Michael’s Custom Trip Planning service.

Hi Puja,

Thanks and, yes, there are feasible backpacking trips in southern Utah and Arizona in late November and early December. While the weather becomes more of a risk at that time of year, I have backpacked in the Southwest at that time of year. In fact, I just helped a couple plan a Grand Canyon trip for the week of Thanksgiving. I don’t think Owl and Fish canyons would be the best choice, but I could offer you suggestions. I’ll email you about it. Thanks for asking.

Wondering if it is possible to do a backpacking trip in Utah in November/early December? I would also consider getting your help with planning the trip. Look forward to hearing from you if timing will work.

Michael planned a recent 9-day trip to Southern Utah for me & my husband & our adult son. With Michael’s advice, we stayed “just the right” amount of time in Zion, Bryce, and Capitol Reef. We had an incredible time. It’s only a few times a year that we get together and I feel like Michael’s custom trips make these vacations a “Wow!” We hiked Angels Landing (scoring a last-minute permit on our first attempt w/ Michael’s advice). We hiked the spectacular Narrows. Michael suggested big things and small to make our trip so memorable, fascinating, and frankly unforgettable!

His trip planning services are a bargain for what you are getting—his top-tier advice on both strategy (what does your family want to do?) and tactics (his outstanding expertise on how to accomplish this). And he gives creative logistics suggestions that I never would have thought of. Michael’s custom trip planning is not just for backpacking/wilderness trips. For this trip, we stayed in lodging (again which came recommended based on his personal experience). It just saved me (as trip planner for the family) I’d estimate 40-60 hours of time planning and again, made the most of our limited family time together. 100% recommend! Once you hire Michael once, you’ll find yourself dreaming of taking another adventure vacation that Michael can make a reality.

Michael helped me plan two incredible adventures—one to Yosemite and another to the Wind River Range (the Winds)—and both trips exceeded all expectations. His background as the former Northwest Editor at Backpacker magazine really shows in the depth and quality of his planning, with encyclopedic knowledge of wilderness areas from trail conditions and permit requirements to the best campsites and viewpoints.

Michael was an absolute delight to work with throughout the entire planning process—incredibly responsive, warm, professional, and enthusiastic, taking the time to understand exactly what I was hoping to get out of each trip and tailoring the itineraries to my specific interests and skill level. The trip plans he provided were thorough and well-organized, covering everything from logistics and gear recommendations to daily itineraries and backup plans, giving me confidence to tackle these adventures and focus on enjoying the experience rather than worrying about details. Both trips were absolutely spectacular and went off without a hitch thanks to Michael’s expert planning, with routes that showcased the very best each area has to offer and places I never would have found on my own.

If you’re considering a backcountry adventure and want the confidence that comes with expert planning, I wholeheartedly recommend Michael Lanza’s custom trip planning service—his combination of extensive knowledge, personalized attention, and genuine passion for the outdoors makes him an invaluable resource for any wilderness adventure.

Michael first directed me to the area where we hiked, and he then helped me prepare with thorough and thoughtful guidance on gear, routes, and more. I had some meaningful constraints—backpacking with young boys, time of year, and distance from our house—and Michael suggested the perfect trip that satisfied all of them. There is so much information available these days, but much of it lacks judgment and almost all of it lacks context. Michael’s suggestions, in contrast, reflect his unique judgment, based as it is on years of experience and expertise, and were tailored to my specific context. This was really valuable to me in planning and preparing. I feel fortunate to have found Michael, and, more importantly, to have had this wonderful adventure with my sons. I am already planning next year’s trip and plan to ask Michael for help.

I told him what I was looking for, what I knew and what I needed help with and he met me there. His guidance on a whole range of issues including research, distance, elevation, equipment, food and water, route planning, wildlife safety, and a whole host of other issues made my trip a complete success. Although I was going to an area he’d never been before it was like having a partner right beside me with all kinds of thoughtful questions and useful advice to think everything through. If you’re planning a trip and wondering, “How would a pro do this?” plan it with Michael. You’ll be glad you did when you say to yourself afterwards, “That trip was everything I wanted it to be!”

Given all that goes into a backpacking trip… the cost, planning time, taking precious vacation days, etc. it is nice to minimize the uncertainties and the unknowns. Our hikes were challenging but rewarding, and perfect for my girls who had never backpacked before. The trip was so enjoyable (well…except for the bugs…) that my daughters are asking for another trip. My number one goal was to introduce my daughters to the wonders of backpacking and the beauty of the backcountry in hopes that they would come away with a new appreciation and love for the outdoors. The trip that Michael planned did just that!

Thanks to Mike’s custom trip plan, we had a GREAT trip to Glacier National Park in August 2024. Mike patiently answered many pre-trip questions about gear, food, local details, etc. He reviewed the current gear that we had and made suggestions for updates while understanding that we were on a budget.

Our four-day trip was a huge adventure with unforgettable scenery and lots of precious family time together—unplugged. We even encountered a raging thunderstorm but made it through thanks in part to the preparations that Mike suggested.

Now, we’re thirsty for new adventures. We’re sure to turn to Mike and The Big Outside for help. We recommend Mike!

I was looking at Yosemite, but he suggested Southern Utah (where I had never hiked) given the time of year. He gave us several suggestions appropriate for our skill and experience. After choosing the hike, Michael gave us all the details we needed on the route (including alternate routes) and day hikes in the surrounding area. He gave us tips on equipment and answered all of our questions. As others have noted here, he was very responsive, even checking in with us just before we left on our trip. We are already working with Michael to plan our next trip back to Southern Utah. And then the Yosemite trip. Having access to an expert brought peace of mind and confidence that opened up a whole new part of the country to me.

Michael’s guidance really helped me hone the basic outline of my trip — where and when to go to be able to get a permit, general outline of the days and nights of the trip. And then, once I had locked that in, he provided a slew of super helpful information and recommendations to fill in the details. And lastly, as the trip approached and I had last-minute questions, Michael was responsive no matter how minor the question. I really recommend Michael’s custom trip planning and will do it again!

So after patiently trying to get us into two different very popular national parks (RMNP and the Smokies) Michael customized a “plan C” for us to section hike the AT through the White Mountains of NH.

Michael comprehensively addressed all of the details including where to park, hiker shuttles, gear recommendations, and even baked in an alternate itinerary to allow for either one less/extra day. Finally, Michael patiently answered multiple follow-up emails with “one more question.” IMHO: it’s “cheap insurance” to tap into Michael’s expertise and not have a dream trek go badly.

Got engaged, spent a week on the Burning Man playa, and then backpacked in Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and Yosemite. While recalling memories from this great trip, I also remembered that I forgot to write a review for Michael’s trip planning service. Well, here goes.

From the get-go, Michael was extremely responsive and flooded us with a wealth of information. We literally had to schedule hours on weekends to review the content Michael provided. Yes, of course it was templated, but with such attention to detail and customization that it felt tailor made. We learned everything we needed from Michael’s supremely detailed guides and itineraries. Furthermore, Michael was always there to answer any follow-up questions. Truly outstanding service.

Can you find all the information Michael tells you on the internet for free? Yes, of course. Will it take you tens of hours to compile it? Yes it will. Will it be personalized to your questions and needs? Maybe, if you try really hard, but there’s a high chance you’ll make a mistake. Like we almost missed the window to submit our Grand Canyon backcountry application, because as Europeans we didn’t even realize that was a thing. (You need to fax that thing!) Michael literally saved our chance to backpack in Grand Canyon, and Hermit Trail was absolutely breathtaking.

Our more than a month-long trip to the US cost quite a fortune and spending a few hundred bucks on a custom plan from Michael was no doubt one of the best decisions we’ve made.

Thanks Michael!

On the long car ride back, I mentioned to my friend that finding Michael on the web years ago was one of the best discoveries I’ve ever made on the internet. He has given me the inspiration and courage to make these trips with my kids, and in doing so, I’ve created lasting memories, and I’ve been able to change my appreciation for the great outdoors in this beautiful country that I wouldn’t have done otherwise.

Michael went above and beyond what we expected for such a minimal expense for custom trip building. He gave us multiple routes to look at, with various options based on the weather and how we were feeling, and included details and tips based on his personal experiences for camp site selection, hiking mileage, and alpine lakes for fly fishing.

In addition, Michael gave us gear tips, wildlife information, weather advice and much more. The trip planning from Michael couldn’t have been easier; we communicated via email, as well as a couple of phone conversations, and he delivered a 10-page custom trip plan that was incredibly detailed and well thought out.

He also made himself available for last minute questions up until the time we left for the trip. As a result, we fell in love with the Wind River Range and can’t wait to get back and explore some more.

We used the Talk To Michael custom trip planning option. Michael Lanza’s knowledge and experience proved to be a big help to us. This was a short trip (3 days/ 2 nights) to help make sure it would be a ‘success’ for our grandson. Michael took special consideration towards our 12-year-old grandson to help prepare and motivate him. He gave us lots of good advice in both the interview/zoom meeting as well as the written plan. He helped us manage the heat of the Grand Canyon in mid-September: 45F at dawn at the Rim and 105F in the afternoon at Phantom Ranch (long sleeve sun hoodies are a must). He helped us carefully consider our pack weight and what we packed – helping to get our (adult) initial pack weight down to ~ 34 lbs.! I would recommend the services that Michael Lanza offers to anyone who seeks information or needing confidence regarding a hike/backpack trip into an area they are not familiar with. He did us well!

But, I was short on time and overwhelmed by choice and reached out to Michael for help booking a solo hut-to-hut trek in Europe. After listening to my criteria, he recommended a few options and we narrowed it down to a 6-day trek in Jotunheimen Nat Park in Norway. More than anything else, his suggested itinerary was excellent. The result felt like a beautiful combination of the biggest highlights in Jotunheimen and gorgeous, remote wilderness. The time saved researching routes and figuring out the booking was well worth it, and I had an absolutely phenomenal trip! Thank you Michael!

Knowing a campsite is coming up on a remote wilderness trail, especially at the end of a long day hiking is worth it’s weight in gold.
Following Michael’s gear advice had us out for 4 days with not much over 20 lbs. on our backs, yet safe when 40 mph gusts dropped 6 inches of snow on us at just under 11,000ft in August!
Travel light! Travel smart.
Thank you Michael!!

I had asked Michael to create an itinerary that included mileage and elevation goals as well as some flexibility allowing an optional extension of the trip or a dayhike at some point in the trip. Michael went well beyond that request with very specific recommendations for a wide range of options. Our resulting trip was outstanding.

Michael’s intimate knowledge of the Wind River Range combined with his willingness and hard work to help us tailor our trip to our specific goals went way beyond my expectations. The level of detail he provides makes trip planning so much easier for me. It also clearly helps me to enjoy far better trips than I could possibly create on my own. This is the third time that I have used Michael’s service for backpacking trip planning and I will definitely be asking for his help planning further adventures in the future.

Although my three friends and I are all experienced backpackers, it had been a while since our last big adventure. Michael’s expertise and attention to detail were invaluable in ensuring we were fully prepared and didn’t overlook anything. He introduced us to this stunning trail, which we would have never known about otherwise. Thanks to Michael, our trip was seamless and unforgettable. Highly recommend his services!

I’m now less than 30 days from embarking on a 17-day “modified” John Muir Trail thru-hike and I’m very, very glad I did.

His deep knowledge of literally every topic important to a JMT hiker is expressed with the skill of a gifted writer and backed up by his experience hiking this and so many other trails. He takes the time to understand your goals and capabilities and delivers a detailed trip plan. Logistics, equipment, tips for a solo hiker, resupply, training, weather… it’s all there. And Michael responds quickly to questions and checks in often at the most critical stages of your planning.

The permit process for the popular JMT hike was a particular source of uncertainty and a big concern. Michael laid it all out and, when the Yosemite lottery failed me, presented a terrific workaround. Rather than the disappointment of a year’s delay, I’m looking forward to an epic experience and going into it excited and better prepared because of Michael Lanza. I highly recommend his Custom Backpacking Trip Planning service.

Planning a hiking trip for my son and I was intimidating. Good locations, appropriate level of difficulty, permit processes, reasonable gear requirements, etc., were all way beyond me figuring out. Michael eliminated all those concerns and created perfect plans fine-tuned for us. In fact, as we crossed paths on the trails with locals, they were all impressed with our plan. Needless to say, I highly recommend his product!

It was amazing! We spent 4 days on the Teton Crest Trail.

Michael was especially helpful in the initial trip planning, narrowing options down, routing ideas, and figuring out permits. We didn’t initially get the exact permits we wanted, but he helped develop an alternative plan and then when we got the ideal permitting the day before the trip – he jumped back in and helped make sure we knew everything we needed to know.

Thanks, Michael!

For backcountry backpacking trips, we need to be informed, prepared and organized when heading into an adventure. A couple of years ago, every time I researched trips, best practices, etc., Michael’s name kept popping up so I decided to reach out to him. In hindsight, it was a blessing! Michael has prepared three trips for us in UT and WY. Not only did he put together three amazing itineraries, but he gave us options based on what we might encounter: snow, winter runoff, lack of water, etc. That’s going above and beyond in my opinion! Results matter, right? In each case, we had wonderful experiences on the adventures that Michael put together for us. Moreover, his insights into mileage (based on group fitness), weather conditions, hazards, etc. Michael’s experience is evident in his trip planning. We have been very happy with our work with Michael and we look forward to working with him again in the future!

We were overwhelmed with the prospect of planning a trip—where to go, how far to hike, how many days to spend. That’s when we turned to Mike for help.

Mike expertly guided us through the planning process and we ultimately settled on a trip to Glacier National Park. Navigating the permit system and route planning can be a daunting task, but Mike provided us with a personalized plan that included three options based on our preferences.

Thanks to Mike’s expertise, we’re eagerly anticipating our four-day backpacking trip to Glacier. We’ll be following our first-choice route and relying on the wealth of information on Mike’s blog to ensure we have the right training, gear, and packing tips for the trip of a lifetime.

We can’t recommend Mike enough—if you’re planning a backpacking trip, he’s the one to turn to!

Without wasting much time, I opted for a Premium Subscription, and let me tell you, that was some wise money spent.

I cannot speak more highly of a service and a person. We could never have selected a location for that time of year, contemplated an appropriate itinerary, planned for the appropriate gear and contingencies, or generally gotten the most of a trip like that, without him. And even as the park decided to close a few areas on our agenda a few weeks before our trip, Michael came through with some suggested changes to the itinerary which ended up being absolutely incredible and stunning. I am so happy I found him…as we plan to use him many, many more times for family adventures!

It seemed strange to pay for the services of a hiking consultant. However, given the time and expense required to travel halfway across the country for a backpacking trip, it’s money well-spent. I’m sure we would have had a fun trip without Michael’s help, but the thoughtful itinerary he planned for us delivered stunning scenery and fun hiking from start to finish.

Thank you for the nice words, John. But more importantly, good on you for getting back to the Sawtooths to complete the hike you had to cut short last year. I’m happy you did that. And, of course, I always look forward to helping you plan your next adventure!

Trip got cut short last year but we were able to complete it this year. Spectacular trip. No question that Michael’s planning made it more enjoyable. Removed all uncertainty for someone coming from the East Coast. Instructions and tips were spot on. Planning to use his advice again shortly, it was invaluable. Can’t say enough good things. And the cost is trivial, when you compare it to the amount of money you spend on hiking equipment and travel, don’t let that prevent you from accessing a wealth of information.

I have packed all over US and Europe, and the range was beautiful AND low maintenance to do. Incredible lakes, jagged, interesting peaks and ridges. Very beautiful, it reminded me a bit of the Sierras. But the lack of permits required and ability to still have campfires added to make it a lights-out trip. I can’t recommend Michael enough, he makes it easy for a person with a busy life to still have epic trips. I highly recommend using him and taking the complication out while ensuring that you are doing just the epic best!

We just had the trip of a lifetime and we would have NEVER even known about this gem of a place called the Sawtooth Mountains and Redfish Lake Lodge in Idaho. Who knew Idaho had way more to offer than just potatoes? It was absolutely stunning and an amazing experience.

It was our first backpacking trip and we heavily relied on Michael’s expertise on how far we would go, where we would camp, pre/post trip logistics, water sources, gear, everything! We pretty much followed his suggestions to the letter, and we had the most amazing time. I loved that I actually got to enjoy the beauty of the trip and not stress planning it all. I also wouldn’t have known the best place to go. I just can’t get over how I would’ve never fallen in love with the Sawtooth Mountains if it wasn’t for this trip plan! I also loved that he gave us several options to end early or just take a different route, which we did utilize because I was more exhausted than I planned! Every hiker we passed was pretty much doing the route we were doing in the opposite direction but Michael’s expertise suggested we hike to the lodge instead. I’m so glad we did it that way!

That was definitely the best money I’ve ever spent! I look forward to using Michael in the future to uncover more hidden gems where we can go explore!

His step-by-step instructions on the advance permit process were invaluable in getting the itinerary we wanted (and I’m convinced we would have been overwhelmed on our own). Once we (finally) got out on the trail, his detailed trail notes gave us the confidence and peace of mind to enjoy the journey while knowing what we had coming up next and allowed us to get 3 unforgettable campsites (and a fourth that wasn’t half-bad either). This is the second trip that Michael has planned for us and I’m sure it won’t be the last!

He told me when to apply for permits, the route to take for our road trip, towns to stay in, which hiking trails would be good for our family, etc. I will definitely use him to help us plan another trip. This was my wife’s and my first time backpacking. We could not have planned out our trip or succeeded at it without the detailed guide that Michael provided. We applied for our backpacking permit through the Grand Canyon and he worked with us to design a trip around the campsites we obtained on our permit. He even suggested an extra dayhike to make use of a day we were unsure what to do with. It was a great value and we will definitely consult him again for planning future hiking trips.

I am a very experienced backpacker, having planned countless trips on my own. Still, I had never been to the backcountry of Yellowstone before, so planning a trip all by myself would have required extensive research to determine the ideal time to go, the best area of the massive park, the best sites to see and the optimal campsites, and on and on. Above all, with the limited number of campsites available in the National Park, I really wanted assistance with the reservations and permits.

Michael has provided everything I asked for, with a carefully constructed multi-page itinerary with much flexibility and many options that enabled me to jump start my planning process by many weeks. I emailed Michael a number of times and his responses were prompt. He answered all my questions on many diverse topics from sleeping pads to combat the cool night temperatures to ideal dates for avoiding mosquitoes.

I probably would have made a few key mistakes in my own planning without his sage advice. Michael gave much more extensive responses to my questions than I would have expected. I guess that’s just the excellent quality service that he provided to his customers.

So even if you could plan the trip yourself, I recommend Michael’s service to save substantial blocks of time and avoid errors. Above all, he knows about getting reservations, which is critical in the National Parks these days.

All were fantastic, it takes the guesswork and logistics work out of it. I have been backpacking with the same group for 22 years, so we certainly know how to do it. That said, the extra help when things get busy, and helping us find epic adventures, keeping the quality up year-on-year are both terrific. Trip planners are thorough and incredibly detailed. Its value is many multiples of the cost. The Dolomite excursion was our best ever by far, and it would have been incredibly complicated to do the research to figure out which refugios were the ones to use. I highly recommend, whether you are a newbie or a veteran.

Hi Heidi,

My good friend Guido Buenstorf, who’s a widely traveled trekker and all-around adventurer as well as a prominent economist in Germany (although I keep telling him that he could have a much more prestigious career as an outdoors blogger), shared this additional advice in response to your question:

“Generally, May is very early for the Alps. We did not get a lot of snow this winter and are unlikely to get much more at this time of the year. Still, I’d be hesitant to recommend a trip that gets them to more than 1500 meters/5,000. Malerweg is in Sächsische Schweiz, close to Dresden, which has some of the most dramatic scenery you’ll find below 1000 meters.

“Two things came to my mind immediately. First, the Allgäu region, which is the Western part of the German (pre-) Alps. I did not find an English website, but they market three long-distance trails at three levels of altitude. Himmelsstürmer will not be safe at that time of the year, but Wasserläufer (the mid-altitude variant) might be an option. All three trails are very long, but they might choose nice sections. More specifically within Allgäu (and not too alpine for the season) is the region between Pfronten and Tannheimer Tal (which belongs to Austria), or farther west between Sonthofen and Balderschwang.”

I hope that gives you more information to work with, Heidi. Good luck.

Hello Heidi,

First of all, thanks very much for subscribing to The Big Outside, I appreciate your support for my blog. That’s great you’ve returned to backpacking. I was on a long section of the JMT last August. See my blog story “High Sierra Ramble: 130 Miles On—and Off—the John Muir Trail.”

Yes, the higher-elevation hikes in Europe would be snowbound through May and much of June, into early July on the highest treks, including Scotland’s Highlands. The Picos de Europa is often good in June but you read that we had a snowstorm then; May would likely be treacherous on many trails there, snow and ice.

In May, the only European trails likely to be snow-free for hiking are going to be lower elevations in or near the Mediterranean. One of the several I’ve done in Europe was in Spain’s Valencia region, in May, and it was delightful. There’s a trail on Corsica I’ve not hiked but had my eye on for a while called the Selvaggio Blu, but it’s reputed to be quite hard, requiring rappels in places. But I think it may be snow-free by May.

I’ve read that the Alps have had a very warm and snow-less winter, so if that persists through spring, the trekking season may begin unusually early this year. But May would be very early and it’s still too early to predict.

That’s not much help, I know, except to affirm your suspicion that the highest routes will not likely be available to them.

Let me know if I can ever help you with trip planning or answer any questions.

I was delighted to find your website as I was researching upcoming trips. I recently returned to backpacking after many years. Most recently, I did seven days on the JMT. It was incredible, and I am looking to more. Your posts inspire many ideas.

At the moment, I am helping my son and a friend plan a 4-8 day backpacking trip in Europe in May 2023. Do you know of any high alpine trips that might work then? I realize it is too early for the traditional trips in the Alps. I read your post on Picos de Europa, which sounds amazing and also scary with the sudden snowstorm. They are looking at a few options in Germany, Malerweg and Rheinsteig. These offer a nice mix of nature and culture. However, I would like to provide them a high alpine opportunity as well. They could even make two or three villages base camps for day hikes. They have some but not abundant backpacking experience.

If you have ideas, I would love to have you help create a custom itinerary.

Thanks in advance,
Heidi

I was successful at getting a difficult permit for 6 nights in Grand Teton and got a reservation at all of the backcountry camping zones I wanted. I definitely would not have achieved this on my first time without his knowledge and detailed instructions on how to plan out the trip and especially how to prepare to use the recreation.gov permit site. All permits essentially sell out within minutes and he helped me create a plan that was realistic and successful. He’s provided me with an extremely detailed trip itinerary and plan that answers all the questions I had; and for anything where I wanted clarification, he has been available and responded quickly via email.

Could not be happier with the custom trip planning and I’m very much looking forward to seeing the Grand Tetons, which Michael obviously knows well and loves!

Thank you Michael!

Michael responded and delivered a great plan by end of day and was available the following morning during registration. Just as valuable is what I’ve learned about the Teton Crest Trail and backcountry from Michael. I had read several of his articles on hiking the GTNP backcountry and recognized right away his deep knowledge and love of the park.

Having dayhiked up the various canyons in the past, I wanted access to Michael’s knowledge and passion to maximize the experience for my trip with my wife and daughter. Michael wanted to know about my party’s hiking and backpacking experience and really took the time to take that information into account, as well as what I was thinking about and wanting to accomplish. He presented a very detailed plan, complete with what we would see on the trail as we hiked each day. He provided mileage and elevation gain and loss. I particularly appreciated his responsiveness to my questions and was very happy with the plan he presented. The trip itinerary included options for managing daily mileage and factoring in an additional day to take in some side treks off the main Teton Crest Trail. He responded to my questions and provided very useful information regarding reservation strategies.

Michael cares about the park and I believe he cares about my family’s experience of the park.

One comment referred to someone who does this as a jackass, several wondered why anyone would entertain such folly, and several also added that it was too dangerous to carry big loads. Well, I am an absolutely nobody who is no expert in anything, but I have done the JMT twice – once alone – with everything I needed on my back from start to finish. Of course it was heavy; I was much younger, and there was no ultralight gear available in the 70’s and 80’s. If there had been no one would have been able to afford it anyway (my Trailwise 3 lb 550 fillpower bag was an obscene $65, and we didn’t have as many $30 jackets with the $80 label). I know that it is much nicer to carry 25 lbs instead of 55; there were thousands of us carrying big loads and still getting up and over every pass without falling apart. It seems that the prevailing collective consciousness dictates that virtually any/every long hike needs to be done according to ‘superlight fastpacking’ parameters. As to the cost of starting out with what hikers are told is ‘necessary’…..it’s quite an investment. But, my car is 14 years old. Things have really changed. BTW, my wife and I did the traverse of the Sierras (onion valley, Keasarge pass, cedar grove) in one day. We met some backpackers who were almost demanding that we explain how we could be out there without any ‘stuff’. We told them what we were doing and they looked at us as though we were walking to our deaths. The JMT is too narrow inn some places to accommodate that kind of attitude..

Thanks very much, John. I’ve enjoyed helping you with some amazing trips and I agree, the Dolomites stand alone for scenery. Looking forward to working with you on the next adventure.

We did the Alta Via 2 in the Italian Dolomites. Best scenery in my 45 years of backpacking. Michael’s trip planning was critical as choosing the routes and rifugios can be prohibitively time-consuming. Lots to consider from the altitude/distance each day to the “exposure” of the trails considered (lots of Via Ferrata). Michael’s planning made that part simple and enabled us to not only do something we would otherwise not had the time to do, but to focus on having fun and the scenery vs. being worried about logistics! As I have said, he has worked with us on domestic US/Canada trips as well, taking a lot of the time and work out of planning. I highly recommend him and his amazing breadth of experience.

Thanks, Chuck, and you guys certainly scored a permit for an envious adventure in Glacier!

Michael provided excellent advice and coaching on how to navigate the complex process of getting a Glacier backcountry permit. I don’t believe we would have been awarded the permit without Michael’s help. The small fee that he charged was well worth it! Thanks for your help Michael!

I asked Michael to put together a 5 day trip that would take into account my experience and comfort level and was absolutely thrilled with the result. He put together an itinerary that challenged me without pushing me too far outside of my comfort zone, with spectacular scenery. It was a wonderful experience, I definitely benefitted from his expertise. Had I tried to put something like that together myself I really don’t know how it would have turned out, but with his guidance it was a fantastic trip.

He took the time to understand what was important to my wife and me and our itinerary exactly matched our preferences. We came to him with our destination as “somewhere out West,” and he worked with us until the end result was a fantastic route through the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho. The confidence we gained from his detailed guide made our hike so much more enjoyable and his suggestions for campsites left us with pictures that were the envy of our family and friends. I would not hesitate to use his service again and would highly recommend him to anyone!

This is the 2nd time Michael has supported us with his custom trip planning package and again his expertise on the routes was superb! He’s gotten to know the diversity in our family well enough to set a course adventurous enough for the teenager and reasonable enough for the over 50’s. With our daughter’s love for hiking and water, he proposed a course in Wyoming’s Wind River Range that had our whole family taking an invigoratingly refreshing dip in an alpine lake at least once a day.

This year in particular we appreciated the direction of the route he proposed, including some alternate itineraries. As we hiked, we regularly found ourselves acknowledging we’re getting the better view or approach to the setting. And, as the weather cooperated, we were able to also accommodate traversing a particularly beautiful tundra area, the Lizard Head Plateau.

Michael’s trip planning packet is so comprehensive (13 double-sided pages this year) that we decided to cut and paste sections of it to bring on the trail with us and reviewed each night before the next day’s adventure. In addition to Michael’s custom trip planning package we also have chosen a premium subscription to The Big Outside blog which regularly has tidbits of helpful and inspirational information and stories. Last, working with Michael is a like having a personal, virtual guide for our trips. He’s highly knowledgeable, responsive and has become a friend invaluable to our family’s wilderness ventures.

I just got back from completing the JMT and it was so wonderful to have the detailed plan he prepared for me. Even though I felt I had done a lot of research ahead of time, I could tell that Michael’s trip planning service would save me more time and effort, and more importantly, specific ideas and details he provided in his custom report made the trip a lot more fun and avoided some of the ‘gotchas’ I might have fallen into if I had planned it myself. The level of detail that I received from his trip planning of service was so impressive and it far exceeded my expectations! My husband went along for the first part of the hike, and then I finished the JMT – what a wonderful experience! I would not have been able to do this hike if it weren’t for Michael’s custom, detailed plan. Thank you!

Michael, through the Custom Trip Planning option, which is part of the Premium Subscription package, was worth it for me.

I am going to hike “the Big Ditch” in October. I needed to understand the ins and outs of obtaining a backcountry permit – to increase my chances of obtaining the dates and routes that I thought would be best for my abilities, while maximizing the overall experience. In addition, I wanted to have a unique plan that took advantage of Michael’s many years of experience and trips to the Grand Canyon. I did not want the usual, highly trafficked route that most people take but rather some more unique routes and camp sites. Michael walked me through the process and created a specific trip plan with all the little particulars needed. I was able to not only secure the dates but also the exact route that I sought. It will be memorable.

Michael’s insights, plans and guidance should be taken advantage of when planning your next big hike.

Thanks, Parker, I’m glad that you and your dad had such a rewarding hike on the Teton Crest Trail (and I’ll point out that going later in summer mostly eliminates the mosquitoes). Let me know when you’re ready to plan the next one!

We were given excellent campsite recommendations as well as great side hikes on the TCT, contributing significantly to a great experience. Additionally, his counsel on gathering backcountry permits was extremely helpful and saved us much hassle. He was the MVP of our trip!

In GTNP, I strongly recommend staying at Death Canyon Shelf and North Folk Cascade if you are hiking the Teton Crest Trail. Additionally, coming down Paintbrush Canyon is a must. The bug and mosquito situation is severe, though, so prepare for that.

Overall, Michael was a great help, I strongly recommend his guidance. Now time to plan the next hike!

He tailored a custom trip plan with an exorbitant amount of detail and expertise. We interacted multiple times through the planning phase and we now feel fully prepared and excited about our backcountry trek. Thanks Michael. I look forward to tapping into your experience for future trips. Highly recommend his custom trip planning for anyone looking for a tailored experience!

Hi Rc,

I honestly believe that all U.S. national parks are quite safe, with crime a rarity. As for the best 7- to 10-day hike in the parks, that’s hard to choose but the very best options would have to include a 94-mile traverse I did mostly on the Continental Divide Trail in Glacier National Park, and an “87-mile hike I took through northern Yosemite, and almost any section of the John Muir Trail, especially including portions in the John Muir Wilderness and Kings Canyon National Park.

See my stories story “America’s Top 10 Best Backpacking Trips” and “The 10 Best National Park Backpacking Trips.”

I hope that helps and good luck. Get in touch anytime.
