Hi Gary,

I do have plans to post a new story with tips on fording a creek, including appropriate footwear. Watch for that coming up. Thanks for asking.

Michael

Michael,

Would you consider adding a review or recommendations for creek crossing footwear? I tend to get lost in the weight, open vs closed toe, and other issues and end up strapping an old pair of trail running shoes to my pack if I know I will top out my boots on crossings.

Thanks,
Gary

Hi Jeff,

Yes, you’ll hike the vast majority of the Timberline Trail on a dry or simply muddy footpath and change into sandals or other footwear for the handful of creek crossings. You are not at all walking almost constantly in water, as in Zion’s Narrows. Good luck with it.

Are there so many water crossings that it would make sense to do the hike in water shoes (like the Virgin Narrows)?

Great to hear that, thanks for the report, Scott. It is a beautiful hike.

No issues on any of the crossings. Eliot even had a fat log across it. Beautiful backpacking trip but as long as you’re on trail 600 there are no rope sections either and the crossings are all very manageable when done smartly. Loved the solitude.
