I’m sure those memories are as sharp now as the moment you saw those scenes, Jim. Ansel Adams did call the High Sierra the Range of Light, after all.

•> Marie Lake below Selden pass, where a 1996 hailstorm ended during an alpenglow sunset. Amazing scene.
•> Also Thousand Island lake, but from the upper end. We camped near a slow stream at the base of Banner Peak before crossing to the NF San Joaquin the next morning in 2002.

Thanks for the compliment, Danielle, and the suggestion. I’ve had a hike to Cracker Lake on my to-do list for a while, still planning on getting there eventually. I’ve seen photos and heard good things about that spot. Must do.

One of my favorite backcountry lakes is Cracker Lake in Glacier National Park; it’s a short backpacking trek and very worth it if you’ve never been!

Thanks, ksenia. Yes, I’ve camped at Crater Lake in the Wallowas, too, nice spot. Glad you enjoyed this story.

All gorgeous! Hiking the Wallawas in Oregon very early in the season and seeing a dozen lakes was a life highlight. Mirror lake was a fantastic campsite, but my favorite was the little crater lake. It was absolutely gorgeous — so blue and clear. But it was also warm! even in the first days of July you could swim and enjoy it. The campsites were perfect and best of all — nobody else was there!
