They are very comfortable.

Thanks Michael. That caveat was exactly my reservations on a multi day trip. I was thinking the same thing.
Thanks again!

Hi Slade,

Good to hear from you and thanks for that question. I have actually given that advice to other people before: When temps will remain constantly hot, even whether it’s humid or dry, a cotton T-shirt that’s wet with sweat will clearly not cause you to become cold and may feel more comfortable by enhancing the natural evaporative-cooling effect of perspiring.

One caveat: I’ve usually given that advice just for people on a dayhike. On a multi-day hike, when you will wear the same base layer over multiple days, that cotton T-shirt may never completely dry out overnight in humid air and it could become less appealing to pull on that wet T-shirt in the morning; not to mention that it will quickly develop quite a good funk to it. (I have personal experience with that: On some of my first backpacking trips, very inexperienced, I wore cotton T-shirts and that’s exactly what happened, of course.)

I hope that’s helpful. Enjoy your AT hike.

Hope you and your family are doing well. Just had a quick question. Do you think hiking in high temperatures with high humidity would be the exception for hiking in cotton? I’m doing the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail end of August for 2 weeks and have been finalizing my gear list and thinking about cotton as base layer top to hold moisture to stay cool under those conditions. Been hiking 2-3 days a week in synthetic tops in 95-97 degree temps without overheating. But just wondering if cotton might be even better in these specific conditions. Thoughts?
Thanks buddy!
Slade

Thanks for the suggestion, Shaun. I’ve had good results with Wigwam socks in the past, too.

Thank you for sharing all of your information. I found a great brand of socks at Sportsman’s Warehouse called Wigwam. They have a thinner sock that wicks very well and then a thicker sock for warmth and extra comfort in heavier hiking boots. I really enjoy your articles.

Just wanted to let you know that I tried out several base layers that I bought through the links on this site that you recommended this morning on a dayhike. It was 32 degrees and I wore the Hiker Micro Crew Cushion socks, the Northface Hyperlayer FD Crew shirt short sleeve base top, the Crater Lake Mountain Gear Sun Hoody and the Kuhl Renegade Convertible Cargo Pants with a lightweight Kuhl shell on top. I never got cold and I get cold easily.

Those specific layers are good from 100 degrees to 32 degrees comfortably. They are so lightweight, it feels like I’m wearing silk pajamas. I also wore the same pair of socks with the Capilene Cool Trail Short sleeve base top yesterday on a long gravel ride on my mountain bike. 5 Stars to all of these items. They are without a doubt the most comfortable layers I’ve ever worn. Thanks for the recommendations!

Keep up the great work!
